BORIS CHRISTOFF - BASS

Verso autographed and inscribed original 5” x 7” Foto Locchi of Florence double-weight photograph from the World Premiere of Haydn’s “Orfeo”, “L’Anima del Filosofo”, Teatro alla Pergola in Firenze, June 9, 1951.  Pictured from Left to right: Giulio Coltellacci costume and set designer, Guido Salvini the Regisseur, Maria Callas as Euridice, Erich Keliber conductor and Boris Christoff as Creonte.  The photograph was signed and inscribed in Rome, January 7, 1992.

This performance was the World Premiere of the Haydn “Orfeo”, written in 1791 by the composer for performance in London, a schism between King George III and his son The Prince of Wales, the commissioner John Gallini was not allowed to bring the work to the stage.  The opera sate dormant until 1951 when it was first performed in Firenze at the Teatro alla Pergola with a young Maria Callas and Boris Christoff with Erich Kleiber on the podium.

A fabulous and scarce image of Callas and Christoff.  Christoff later in life refused to sign costume photographs on the front.  We have not encountered this original image signed by any of those pictured in over thirty years of dealing and collecting opera autographs.  This was the only World Premier featuring Maria Callas.

Extremely scarce!
