Autographed Fayer of Vienna postcard photographs of the great Polish bass as Pogner in “Die Meistersinger von Nuremburg”. Manowarda born in Krakow, left to study in Vienna and Graz. He made his debut in 1911 at the Stadttheater in Graz, arriving at the Vienna Volksoper in 1915. A flexible singer, hw created numerous roles of now forgotten operas by the likes of Kienzl and Oberthleitner, however, he excelled in both bass and baritone roles such as Mephistopheles and Wozzek. He sung at Bayreuth on numerous occasions, 1931, 1934, 1939 and his death year, 1942. The singers highlight of his career was in Toscanini’s 1934 Verdi Requiem at the Salzburg Festival, where he sung the bass part. A loyal fascist partisan, he died of a heart attack in 1942 at the age of 52. |
