EMANUEL LIST - BASS |
|
Autographed 6” x 10” photograph of the Austrian-Jewish bass as Baron Ochs to Broadway conductor Joseph Littau. (Who conducted the 1st performance of “Carousel.” List trained in New York with Joshua Ziro, making money as a singer in movie houses. He returned to Austria in 1921, making his debut as Mephistopheles a year later at the Vienna Volksoper. His impression was so great, that he was hired by the Stadische Oper in Berlin and on to the Staatsoper there a year later. List was the Hagen in the 1933 Bayreuth Festpiele. He left Europe the same year, when as a Jew it became apparent to him that his fortunes were slim. He also left with a Metropolitan Opera contract, where he was one of the major house basses in the German wing until 1950. List also sung in South America, Covent Garden, The Paris Opera, Chicago, San Francisco, Holland and the Vienna Staatsoper.
This photograph doubled as a holiday card….from Baron Ochs himself! |
