AUGUSTO BEUF - BARITONE

Rare autographed 7” x 9” original blind embossed Santa Croce of Milano photograph as Rigoletto of the great baritone, 1954.  Beuf, (1887-1969) was born in Palermo.  He studied cello and was a member of the orchestra of the Teatro Massimo.  Though untrained, he had a natural voice and joined with a travelling opera troupe and sung on tour in Egypt and Greece.  He came back to Italy and made his debut at the Communale in 1908.  Many engagements followed throughout Italy and Greece, though he stopped between 1917 and 1918 to study in Rome with the legendary baritone Antonio Cotogni.  He joined the Teatro Caranca in Milan as house baritone in 1918 and two years later was hired by the Costanzi in Rome.  Pietro Mascagni heard him as Alfio there and wrote the role of the Capitano in “Il Piccolo Marat” for Beuf the following year.  His career was made and he sung at the Verona Festival from 1921-1929, Teatro Colon in 1927 and thereafter, Chicago 1931-34, La Scala as of 1939 and for the rest of his career.  He also guested throughout his career in Paris, Brussels, Spain and Germany both in concert and opera.  Beuf made a number of records, however, he stands out best in the Urania Verdi Requiem of 1951.

These wonderful original larger photos of Italian singers are becoming more difficult to obtain.  This is an ideal image!
