BARRE HILL - BARITONE |
|
Autographed and inscribed 8” x 10” matte, double-weight original Paul Stone of Chicago photograph to soprano and pedagogue Belle Forbes Cutter, where both she and Hill were members of the voice department faculty of the Chicago Musical College. Barre Hill (1905-19??) was a Mary Garden find and after study with Frank LaForge, he joined the Chicago Civic Opera and stayed through the 1931-32 season before the Company dissolved. He spent the Summer of 1930 with Garden in Monte Carlo, ostensibly to study the role of Pelleas with her, however, two and two equals four on that one. He was her final Pelleas during a CCO tour in Boston in 1931. While she declared he was her greatest Pelleas, one can presume why. In 1932, Hill came to New York and gave Broadway a try, starring in two musicals. At this point, he decided to retire from the opera stage and devote himself to concerts and teaching. He ran the Voice Departments at the University of Iowa and Oklahoma, as well as the National Music Academy at Interlochen. Rare and interesting! |
