OTTAVIO GARAVENTA - TENOR |
|
Autographed 5” x 7” photograph of the Genovese lyrico-spinto tenor as Guido in “Eine Nacht in Venedig,” at the Bregenz Festival, Switzerland, 1975.
Garaventa started his career as a baritone and after a decade of struggle gave it up and became a stevedore in Genoa. After vocal retraining as a tenor, his career with Rosetta Noli and Vladimiro Badiali, he made his tenor debut in Milan at the Teatro Nuovo as Don Ottavio in 1964. His success was such that he was immediately picked up for the Verdi Festival in Busetto, as well as the opera houses in Genoa and Modena. Garavaneta’s fame spread rapidly and engagements in Milan, Florence and Verona soon followed. He was also hired for three seasons at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, 1971, 1975 and 1979. International appearances included the opera houses of Vienna, Buenos aires, Brussels, Marseilles, Berlin, Frankfort, Lisbon, San Francisco, Chicago, Wiesbaden, Glyndebourne, and Holland.
While the tenor is known for his spinto roles, which include; Calaf, Ismaele (video available), Cavaradossi, Radames etc., he also excelled in the lighter Verdi roles, like Alfredo and the Duke of Mantua, as well as the bel canto roles of Donizetti and Bellini.
An uncommon autograph!
