Deller, a protégé of Sir Michael Tippett, virtually single-handedly revived the art of the British counter tenor tradition during the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. He also revived the works of composer Henry Purcell, himself a counter tenor. Deller was the first and most important counter tenor solo artist during his lifetime.
